Chow Kon Yeow, a prominent Malaysian politician and Chief Minister of Penang since May 2018, has credited Barisan Nasional (BN) for its pivotal role in fostering political stability in both federal and state governments. As a senior leader of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), a key component of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, Chow highlighted the importance of collaboration between PH and BN in ensuring effective governance and development.
Speaking at Penang MIC’s Deepavali open house, Chow praised BN’s contributions, acknowledging the coalition’s support during the 2023 state election. He specifically lauded BN’s component parties, including MIC, for their role in bolstering his administration’s initiatives.
“Political stability has been the cornerstone of our government’s ability to function effectively. This has allowed us to drive social and economic development, ultimately improving the quality of life for the people,” Chow said.
He emphasized the significance of the partnership between PH, BN, and other coalition parties in strengthening the unity government. Chow also credited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership for enhancing national and international confidence in the administration.
Acknowledging Musa Sheikh Fadzir, the Penang BN and Umno chief, Chow praised his leadership in fostering strong ties with PH. “The results of the 2023 state election clearly reflected the success of this collaboration. It demonstrated how unity and teamwork can lead to significant achievements,” he said.
In the 40-seat Penang state assembly, PH-BN secured 29 seats, leaving Perikatan Nasional (PN) with 11. DAP won all 19 seats it contested, PKR clinched seven out of 13, and Amanah retained one out of two. Meanwhile, BN succeeded in winning two of its six contested seats, with Sungai Acheh assemblyman Rashidi Zinol now serving as part of Chow’s state executive council.
Chow underscored the need for continued cooperation between PH and BN as they gear up for the next general election in three years.
Reflecting on the occasion, Chow expressed his gratitude for attending Penang MIC’s first Deepavali celebration in 15 years. During the event, state MIC chief J Dhinagaran and party members surprised Chow with an elaborate flower garland to celebrate his 65th birthday, which had fallen a day earlier.
Also joining the festivities was DAP chairman and former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, adding a sense of camaraderie to the event.
