Global apparel retailer UNIQLO is actively promoting workplace inclusivity and empowering its workforce to better support individuals with disabilities in Malaysia through a partnership with Early Autism Project (EAP) Malaysia.
EAP Malaysia specializes in individualized behavioral treatment programs for individuals with autism, utilizing the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) approach.
Since December, EAP has been offering tailored training and resources to equip UNIQLO Malaysia staff with the necessary skills to effectively engage with employees, customers, and individuals with disabilities.
Speaking with TRP, Evelyn Tan, UNIQLO’s Director of Legal and Sustainability, highlighted how this collaboration with EAP is set to positively impact Malaysia's disabled community.
Specialized Training for Store Managers
Tan explained that the partnership’s immediate objective is to provide regular training for store managers, ensuring they develop the expertise to engage with people with disabilities effectively.
“We’re focusing on equipping our employees with the knowledge and skills needed to create an inclusive environment that benefits both our team and our customers,” she said. Tan also noted that UNIQLO aims to set a new standard for accessibility in the retail industry through this collaboration.
Currently, UNIQLO Malaysia employs 27 individuals with disabilities across its 27 locations nationwide and is committed to increasing this number as the company expands.
Empowering Employees Through EAP Training
Tan emphasized that EAP’s specialized training provides UNIQLO staff with practical tools and insights to interact empathetically and effectively with colleagues and customers with disabilities.
“This training enhances our employees’ confidence in adapting to diverse situations while providing personalized service to meet each customer’s unique needs,” she added.
According to Jochebed Isaacs, Director of EAP Malaysia, the training focuses on building awareness and understanding while teaching practical skills for effective communication and accessibility considerations.
Accessible Physical Store Design
Tan cited the UNIQLO Damansara Avenue Square outlet as a model for physical store accessibility. It features inclusive design elements such as universal fitting rooms, wheelchair-accessible facilities, and designated parking spaces.
“Inclusivity is about more than just physical infrastructure,” Tan explained. “It’s about fostering an environment of respect and support through comprehensive employee training and an inclusive operational mindset.”
Flexible Hiring Practices
When discussing hiring policies, Tan noted that UNIQLO Malaysia does not impose strict limitations based on the severity of a disability. Instead, the company focuses on hiring individuals capable of performing their tasks independently with reasonable accommodations.
By tailoring roles and tasks to individual strengths, UNIQLO ensures that employees with disabilities can contribute meaningfully to their teams. Additionally, these employees receive the same benefits and career development opportunities as their peers.
Support for Career Growth
UNIQLO has also started engaging job coaches to provide personalized guidance to employees with disabilities, ensuring they have the resources to excel in their roles and advance within the company.
Expanding Opportunities Through Partnerships
Recognizing the employment challenges faced by individuals with autism, especially in white-collar sectors, UNIQLO Malaysia has also collaborated with Enabling Academy (EA). This initiative, developed by Gamuda Berhad, helps train and connect individuals on the autism spectrum with employment opportunities.
As part of this partnership, UNIQLO offers a Retail Training Course that combines classroom learning with hands-on in-store experience. Led by employees with disabilities, the program provides trainees with valuable insights and practical skills.
Several trainees from the Enabling Academy have already secured employment with UNIQLO, and the company remains committed to continuing and expanding such programs. Tan expressed that UNIQLO Malaysia is eager to collaborate with other organizations that share their vision of creating meaningful opportunities for all.
