Shanghai, November 5, 2024 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim highlighted Malaysia’s support for China’s principle of a "shared future," which has inspired the nation’s decision to join BRICS. This principle, resonating across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Global South, aligns closely with Malaysia's goals, Anwar said during his address at the 7th China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.

Anwar praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent remarks at the BRICS summit in Kazan, calling it “spectacular.” Xi's message emphasized unity against divisive forces and protectionism, advocating a global community rooted in shared peace, security, and technological exchange.

Malaysia is honored to be recognized as the “Country of Honour” at the 7th CIIE, held from Nov 5 to Nov 10, under the theme "New Era Shared Future." Anwar expressed appreciation for China's inclusive stance on trade, which stands apart from protectionist policies seen elsewhere.

Following speeches by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and leaders from France, Nicaragua, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania, and Uzbekistan, Anwar praised China's progress in governance, policies, and its commitment to global economic cooperation. He noted, “China’s success story demonstrates how governance and forward-thinking policies can uplift global trade, investment, and prosperity.”

The prime minister applauded CIIE’s role as a global platform, not just for Chinese businesses but also for small- and medium-sized enterprises worldwide. He stressed the importance of fair, multicultural cooperation in trade, warning against its misuse as a tool for creating conflict or unfair advantages.

Anwar also discussed Malaysia’s priorities as ASEAN chair in 2025, aiming to foster regional cooperation through a rules-based framework. Malaysia plans to integrate China’s “shared future” vision into the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit, tentatively scheduled for May 2025.

“This summit will mark a vital step toward regional growth and greater parity in global trade, benefiting inclusive economic development,” Anwar stated, adding that ASEAN, as the world’s fifth-largest economy, holds immense potential for driving sustainable, inclusive growth.

Addressing issues of governance, he commended Premier Li’s achievements in poverty reduction, seeing it as an inspiration for Malaysia’s own goals of social and economic reform. Anwar also reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to anti-corruption measures and industrial reforms, aimed at establishing a resilient, transparent economy.

Anwar’s official visit to China, accompanied by key ministers, includes stops in Shanghai and Beijing, underscoring the significance of Malaysia-China relations. The CIIE, part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, will feature 68 Malaysian companies at the Malaysia Pavilion, promoting trade and investment in a partnership that has flourished over the past 15 years.
